Victim Support Counselling
Sometimes your body reacts before you have time to remind yourself that you are safe
A sound, message, memory or ordinary situation can suddenly bring everything back.
You may become tense, feel your heart racing or notice yourself checking your surroundings. Perhaps you avoid certain places, struggle to trust people or feel as though you are always waiting for something to happen.
Other people may assume that because the event is over, you should be able to move forward. But for you, it may not feel over.
What happened may still affect how safe you feel, how you relate to others and how you move through everyday life.
You will not be pressured to tell me everything at once
You may be worried that counselling means retelling the entire experience before you are ready. Perhaps you are concerned that talking about it will make things worse or leave you feeling exposed after the session.
You remain in control of what you share.
We can begin with what is affecting you now and move at a pace that feels manageable. You do not have to provide every detail for your experience to be taken seriously.
Counselling may help you:
feel safer and more grounded
manage anxiety and hypervigilance
understand your responses to trauma
cope with intrusive thoughts or memories
reduce emotional shutdown or overwhelm
rebuild trust in yourself
develop greater stability in everyday life
There is no correct way to respond to trauma and no set timeline for recovery. We will focus on what you need, one step at a time.
