Professional Clinical Supervision
Counselling Students
You are completing your counselling diploma or degree and starting to wonder what comes next
You are learning the theories, practising your skills and working your way through assessments. At the same time, you may be wondering what it will actually feel like to sit with a real client and be responsible for holding that space.
Perhaps placement is approaching and you do not feel completely ready. Maybe you have already begun seeing clients and find yourself replaying sessions, questioning what you said or wondering whether you missed something important.
You might also be thinking further ahead.
What kind of counsellor do you want to become? What opportunities are available after graduation? How do you gain experience, build confidence and begin finding your place within the profession?
There is a big difference between understanding counselling in the classroom and beginning to see yourself as a counsellor.
You are not expected to make that transition alone.
A space to grow into the counsellor you want to become
Student supervision gives you somewhere to bring your questions, uncertainties, client experiences and ideas about your future.
It is a space to connect what you are learning with real practice, understand the responsibilities of the profession and gradually develop confidence in your own way of working.
Perhaps you have found yourself thinking:
“I did not know what to say next.”
“I am not sure whether I handled that properly.”
“I understand the theory, but I do not know how to apply it.”
“This client’s experience has stayed with me.”
“What if I am not ready to do this?”
You do not have to hide those thoughts or pretend to know more than you do.
Questions, uncertainty and reflection are all part of becoming a thoughtful and capable counsellor.
What we may explore together
In supervision, we can slow things down and look at what was happening for the client, what was happening for you and what you might consider next.
Together, we may explore:
building rapport and therapeutic relationships
structuring sessions and asking meaningful questions
applying counselling theories and modalities
case conceptualisation and treatment planning
boundaries, confidentiality and ethical responsibilities
risk assessment and appropriate escalation
case notes and professional documentation
transference, countertransference and personal responses
receiving and applying feedback
placement, professional identity and career pathways
building confidence as you enter the profession
You are welcome to bring the moments you feel proud of too. Supervision is not only about what went wrong. It is also a place to recognise your progress, understand your strengths and build on what is already working.
How we will work together
My supervision style is reflective, collaborative and practical.
I will listen carefully, help you make sense of your experiences and offer clear and honest feedback. I may gently challenge your thinking when it supports your learning, but you will not be criticised for asking questions or not having all the answers.
Rather than simply telling you what to do, we will consider different possibilities, explore the reasoning behind them and help you develop the judgement to make thoughtful decisions in your own practice.
My role is not to turn you into a copy of another counsellor. It is to help you discover the kind of counsellor you want to become.
